How to get painting jobs in Southern California.
What each way takes, and where it stops working.

Most new painting work comes from a short list: past customers and their neighbors, the trades that see houses before you do, a Google profile with reviews, and paid lead services. Below is each one, what the sources say it takes, and who is saying it.

Some sources sell coaching, software or leads. We say so next to each claim, and we are a lead service too.

Before you bid

In California, the license comes first.

Since 1 January 2025, California requires a contractor license for work over $1,000 in labor, materials and everything else on the project. The state contractor board says a person who is not licensed can advertise only for jobs under $1,000, must say in the ad that they are not licensed, and cannot hire workers or do work that needs a permit. A bid over $1,000 from an unlicensed person can lead to legal action [1]. For house painting, the class is C-33, Painting and Decorating [2]. Almost every real painting job is over $1,000, so the license is the first job-getting tool.

A deposit on home improvement work cannot exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the price, whichever is less [3]. Say so in your estimate and it answers a question homeowners are already asking.

Where jobs come from

Six ways to get painting jobs.

01

Past customers and their neighbors.

Painting contractors interviewed by Benjamin Moore, a paint maker, say word of mouth is the strongest source, and that a clean finish and a thorough last walk-through are what get you referred [4]. A lawn sign at the house you are painting is called the best ad you can buy. A painting coach also says to knock the neighbors' doors while you are on site, because painting next door is the easiest sale [5].

02

Door knocking.

The same coach, who sells coaching, says that in his own testing 5,000 doors knocked produced over 100 free leads, while 5,000 flyers cost at least $200, took about 30 hours to deliver and produced 6 to 10 calls [5]. It is one company's result, not a study, and it costs your time, not money.

03

Property managers, real estate agents and other trades.

Call property managers, agents, general contractors and roofers and ask whether they need a reliable painter or have buildings that need bids. The coach says this produced over $200,000 of work in three months for his company [5]. A software company that sells to painters adds that referrals from past customers and adjacent trades close the most often, "often 60 to 80 percent", which is its claim and not a measured rate [6].

04

A Google Business Profile with real reviews.

The same software company calls claiming and filling in your Google Business Profile the best hour of marketing a painter can spend: 20 or more project photos, a real description, 50 or more reviews and a reply to every review within 48 hours [6]. Those targets are its advice. Google decides what shows in the map results.

05

Paid lead services.

Services such as Thumbtack and Angi sell you a request. The coach says to call every new lead within 10 to 15 minutes, follow up by phone, email and text over the first few days, and keep total marketing under 10 percent of the sales it brings in [5]. For what these services charge, read how much painting leads cost in 2026.

06

Buy single requests you can see first.

TradeLeo shows each homeowner request with its price, scope, ZIP code and timing before you buy, and does not resell it after you do. It is new and starts in Temecula, so there may be no request open when you look. You can see what is open, and a free account lets you buy.

What to skip at the start

Waiting for the phone does not work early on.

Flyers, business cards, car magnets, a website with no traffic.

The coach's testing: 5,000 flyers gave 6 to 10 calls at most, cards around town maybe 1 to 2 calls a year, a car magnet one lead in a year, and 300 lawn signs about $1,000 for roughly 10 calls. He says to use them later for branding, not to start [5]. Benjamin Moore's contractors say cards work better handed to people you meet than pinned to a board [4].

Do the lead math before you spend.

The coach's example: to add an extra $10,000 a year you might need about $100,000 more in sales, about 100 more estimates, and 150 to 300 leads depending on your close rate, which is 3 to 6 leads a week [5]. Use your own numbers.

Quick answers

Questions painters ask.

Can I start painting for money without a license in California?

Only for jobs under $1,000 total, without workers or permits, and the ad must say you are not licensed [1]. Above that, you need a contractor license.

How fast should I answer a new lead?

One coach says within 10 to 15 minutes, and follow up over the next few days [5]. It is his rule from running painting companies.

What is the cheapest way to get a first job?

Referrals and the neighbors of a job you are already doing cost the least, according to the sources above [4] [5]. They cost time and good work, not ad money.

Does TradeLeo guarantee jobs?

No. A lead is a homeowner's request, not a booked job, and the homeowner may contact other painters. We do not promise a number of leads. See the Temecula and Murrieta page.
